How to Attract and Retain Talent by Offering Healthcare Benefits

Over the past two years of pandemic-related living conditions, we’ve heard a lot about the struggles of small businesses. One of the most common things we hear from our customers is the struggle to attract and retain employees. While there are differing theories on why the job market is struggling to fill roles, SimplyInsured can help with one piece of the puzzle. By offering healthcare benefits to your employees, you are doing what is best for your most important asset – your employees.

Why should I offer benefits?

One of the main concerns we hear about at SimplyInsured is the ability to find and keep new employees. In general, offering a wage increase is one of the best ways to ensure your employees will stick around. However, running a small business is incredibly tough and wage increases are not always feasible. Offering healthcare benefits is a great way to attract employees and increase retention while providing for your team. You are helping your employees and building a relationship that shows them you care about their health and well-being.

What type of healthcare benefits should I offer?

Healthcare benefits can be solely medical insurance, but can also include dental insurance and vision insurance.

  • Medical Insurance. This type of insurance is referred to as “healthcare” or “health benefits.” Following an accident or illness, medical coverage pays for a portion of medical and surgical expenses of the individual. There are different levels of coverage, and many costs to balance and consider when deciding on insurance. Medical insurance is often considered expensive, in particular when an individual must pay for it on their own.
  • Dental Insurance. Medical plans for the most part do not cover dental care. With a consistent need to take care of your teeth, it is expensive to maintain dental health when paying out of pocket. Dental insurance is usually fairly low cost and simple to add to an employee’s healthcare benefits package. Employees generally pay for dental coverage.
  • Vision Insurance. Much like dental insurance, medical insurance does not cover vision care. Similar to a dental plan, adding a vision plan to a healthcare package is lower in cost and paid for by the employee. Vision plans can cover many services, including eye exams and other expenses.
